Every project has a beginning, and this one holds a special place for me. Elimbah State School was the very first Sensory Pathway I created, and it set the tone for everything that has followed.
Working with the wonderful staff at Elimbah, we transformed a series of concrete pathways leading up from the prep area into a vibrant, immersive outdoor world. The brief was simple — make it engaging, joyful, and meaningful for the kids who would walk through it every single day.
The result was a connected nature-themed journey that winds its way through the school grounds. A giant sunflower with a smiling face anchors the entry ramp, with ladybirds trailing along a winding black path — inviting little feet to follow. Around the corner, a leaping frog lands among lily pads scattered across the concrete, encouraging children to jump, balance, and move. Further along, a cheeky crocodile peeks out from a river of stepping logs — perfect for balance, coordination, and imaginative play. And on the ramp, bold colourful dice and zigzagging lines bring numeracy and movement together in one playful stroke.
Each element was designed with both the child and the curriculum in mind — weaving counting, colour, balance, and nature into the everyday act of walking to class.
Seeing the finished pathway through the eyes of the kids who use it is the greatest reward. This project reminded me of exactly why this work matters and why I am so passionate about bringing art and learning together in our school communities.
