Sensory Pathways

Alongside my studio practice, I work with school communities to create Sensory Pathways. Hand-painted, interactive outdoor spaces designed to support children's learning, movement, and imagination. Each project transforms everyday concrete into a vibrant environment where kids can explore colour, shape, letters, numbers, balance, and play. Developed in close collaboration with teachers, every design is tailored to the school's curriculum and the unique needs of its students. Past projects have included mazes, crocodile rivers with stepping logs, hand and foot balance bridges, lily pads, alphabet bubbles, number rockets, and more. No two pathways are the same. Each one is shaped by the community it belongs to. The benefits go beyond the visual.

Sensory Pathways support cognitive development, fine motor skills, and imagination, while giving teachers a purposeful outdoor space to engage students beyond the traditional classroom. As play-based learning becomes increasingly central to early education, I believe art has a real role to play in that shift.
If a Sensory Pathway sounds right for your school or community, I'd love to hear from you. Scroll down to learn more about the process, or head to the contact page to start a conversation.

The Process

Every Sensory Pathway begins with a conversation. I meet with teachers and school staff to understand the space, the students, and what learning goals matter most. From there, the design takes shape, informed by curriculum, the school's personality, and the children who'll use it every day.

Consultation
A free initial chat to discuss your space, your students, and your vision. I'll ask about curriculum focus areas, age groups, any specific needs within the school community, and the physical dimensions of the area we're working with.
Design & Approval
Based on our conversation, I develop a custom design concept for your approval, covering layout, colour palette, and all the educational and sensory elements we've agreed on. We work through this together until it feels right, then I provide a full quote before anything begins.

Installation
I handle all painting on-site, working around school hours to minimise disruption. I use durable, weather-resistant paints built to withstand Queensland's weather and thousands of little feet.
