Toward Home

Toward HOME brings together five artists whose works explore home as memory, body, history, family and longing. From ancestral connections to domestic critique, sensory experience and emotional terrain, each artist moves toward a different vision of what home is—or could be.

Through a multi-disciplinary approach, the works reflect on comfort and discomfort, presence and absence, rootedness and restlessness. Toward HOME is not about arriving but about searching—the journeys that shape a sense of belonging.

Moreton Bay Art Prize 2025

3rd Place Winner

'BASILEA'

Once again, 'Basilea' is spreading the joy and has been selected for the Moreton Bay Art Prize in 2025 and has taken out 3rd place amongst so many other esteemed artists and works.  I feel honoured and privileged to have this recognition.  Thank you to all the team at Pine Rivers Art Gallery and The Moreton Bay Creative team for once again putting on a beautifully curated exhibition.

Madeline Brewer's judging notes:

Rachel South’s acrylic portrait of local farmer Sarah Heath of Basilea Living Herbs and Edible Flowers is commendable for its local relevance, likeness and creativity. The artist’s detailed rendering and thoughtful composition captures Sarah’s enthusiasm for the natural world and the joy she brings to her community through her work. The flowers are not just decoration; they symbolise cycles of life and care. Congratulations to Rachel South on a deeply moving and technically accomplished work.

North Lakes Guide: It's all in the Detail

...Basilea is the colourful artwork from the hands of Rachel, who has been painting the majority of her life. It came about after attending one of Sarah Heath’s edible flower workshops at Basilea Living Herbs in Burpengary. Rachel was inspired by Sarah’s enthusiasm and the many flowers growing around her and thought it would make a great painting.

“Usually, I will see an idea or composition and get a strong feeling if it needs to be created,” Rachel said. “ It doesn’t always have reasoning, but that develops through the creation process. We both realised it was a reflection of motherhood, how she arrived to now, motherhood, womanhood, femininity and supporting women in business.

“All I wanted was for this painting to reach a wider audience and bring some joy to the viewer. The prize will allow this opportunity for it to be seen again.”

2023 Backyard Art Stories

'Grass Clippings'

"Every day in backyard sheds, garages, home offices and studio spaces across Queensland little known artists are creating beautiful work. They are doing this around full-time careers, families and a myriad of other responsibilities. They create because the artist inside spoke to them. Their stories need to be told." This piece was selected as a runner up in a callout for artworks inspired by our backyards. I was currently creating 'Grass Clippings' and thought it was the right fit.  As part of the selection our works are published in 2023 magazine Edition. www.backyardartstories.com

Art can represent mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind through symbolic images, forms, colours, and indirect suggestions. The use of poetic expression in artwork creates hidden meanings beyond straightforward depictions of people, objects, and places, making inner truths visible.

This exhibition invites artists to submit artwork that portrays mythological, magical, supernatural, spiritual, or mystical themes and experiences. Styles such as fantastic realism, visionary, and inspirational art are encouraged. Throughout history, artists have used symbols to communicate abstract ideas and emotions. The call for submissions is open to all artists and for both 2D and 3D media

Artist Statement:I have an unspoken, ingrained sense to create. My understanding of life’s journey develops through working with the visual. My work explores a perspective on the human psyche and our interconnected mental health. I find most powerful connections come to life when exploring the human spirit and offerings of our country.

Louder and louder, whilst also unseen. To bring to life the feeling of the loud discomfort disguised by the beauty in colour. How we may feel and what is expressed can be the blurred lines in our perspective.

Rainbow Haze is an auric field of our subconscious. Our eyes the windows to our soul. Sometimes feeling less colourful than we are seen.

The terminal between fear and courage, discomfort and ease, stagnation and transformation.

We internalize each slow moving creepy crawly. Most of the time hidden beneath the rainbow haze of our personalities.

So, we journey the pathway of growth, through health and healing. Unable to chase away the fear but come to understand the correlation to our safety. Weaving anchor points of resilience and opportunity. Allowing us the moment for transformation into beautiful colourful creatures.

Brisbane Portrait Prize 2023

Self Portrait: Where The Wild Things Grow

The Brisbane Portrait Prize is all about celebrating Brisbane portrait artists and their sitters, while encouraging public engagement with the arts.  It is with great pleasure and gratitude that my self portrait is a Finalist in this years 2023 Prize on show at the Brisbane Powerhouse until 29th October.

'Once I was a child, endless places you could go through the mind's eye. The foundations of my story in a typical Australian household.  A split face block A frame house in the suburbs of Brisbane.  A window on each side at the peak of the roof overlooking the bush and neighborhood. You could watch all the creatures sitting patiently waiting for their prey. Observers observing. Over time, I have come to question what it is all for? The layers of hereditary conditioning can be all restricting to our thinking.  Artist was not on the list to bring you success. Determined to prove my purpose, I spent my practice trying to find the right ingredient, all the while, I was actually developing my story.  The flow of paint, its translucency.  The way colour gives life to a form.  Connecting with people as a tool for healing, for awareness and voice. This is how I become my authentic self '.

Extra Special Surprise Note -

Your artwork has been selected to be hung in a further showcase in the foyer of Central Plaza One (345 Adelaide Street, Brisbane).

This exhibition will take place from October 31st - November 20th, 2023.

Moreton Bay Region Art Prize 2023

'Maggie'

The Moreton Bay Art Prize is an annual exhibition and prize that supports and celebrates local artists.  I am overjoyed to be selected as a finalist for the Art Prize for 2023.  The opening night was a huge success for the Moreton Bay Arts community.  I feel priviledged that the hard work put into a beautiful painting entitled 'Maggie' has been recognized.  Exhibition runs until the 19th August.  I encourage everyone to go and experience a beautiful curation of local artists.

Outside In - St Vincent's Hospital

'Outside In' aims to provide patients with a connection from the hospital to the outside world. Artworks engender encounters with people, places and experiences beyond the hospital itself. They provide opportunities for reflection and contemplation, engaging memory and recognition, inspiration and motivation.

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane

I am thrilled to be apart of another successful and important exhibition program which brings the outside world upfront and personal for many patients.  To make an impact on someone's day in the slightest of ways through my visual stories is what I create for.   It seemed especially important when my works were shown across the Cancer ward. Level 1, St Vincent's, Chermside.  You can also find work at St Vincent's, Kangaroo Point.

In 2020, artists were encouraged to explore the complex notion of decadence within their own communities and households across Queensland – both in times of shortage, and in times of plenty.

"Their Excellencies" was chosen as a finalist and had the wonderful journey around Queenslands most remote galleries for the following twelve months.
