Backyard Art Stories — 2023
Grass Clippings
Acrylic on canvas — Runner Up
Runner Up Published 2023 Backyard Art Stories Magazine
Two chickens — one rust-red, one wild-crested black and white — preside over a lush mound of swirling green grass clippings, surrounded by nasturtiums, morning glory vines, honeybees, clover and a lone dragonfly drifting past. The backyard in full, glorious life.
Grass Clippings was created from Rachel's own garden and felt like a natural fit for the Backyard Art Stories callout — a celebration of the artists quietly making extraordinary work in sheds, garages and home studios across Queensland, around careers and families and the everyday demands of life.
"Every day in backyard sheds, garages, home offices and studio spaces across Queensland, little known artists are creating beautiful work. They are doing this around full-time careers, families and a myriad of other responsibilities. They create because the artist inside spoke to them. Their stories need to be told."
Selected as a runner up, the work was published in the 2023 edition of Backyard Art Stories magazine — a quiet but meaningful recognition of the kind of art that gets made when nobody is watching, simply because it has to be made.
