Rainbow Haze

A face emerges from a swirling auric field — electric blue hair alive with monarch butterflies at every stage of transformation: caterpillars crawling, chrysalises hanging, wings unfurling. Two mismatched eyes peer through gold winged glasses, one reflecting the world back in fractured blue. A galah nuzzles close. Below, a purple echinacea anchors the whole composition, beetles and crawling things making their slow way upward.
Vivid, fantastical, and psychologically charged — Rainbow Haze is about the inner life we carry beneath the colours others see. Selected as a finalist in the 2023 Flying Arts Queensland Regional Art Award.
Artist's statement
Rainbow Haze is an auric field of our subconscious — our eyes the windows to the soul. Sometimes feeling less colourful than we are seen.
The terminal between fear and courage, discomfort and ease, stagnation and transformation. We internalise each slow-moving creepy crawly, most of the time hidden beneath the rainbow haze of our personalities.
So we journey the pathway of growth — through health and healing. Unable to chase away the fear, but learning to understand its correlation to our safety. Weaving anchor points of resilience and opportunity. Allowing us the moment for transformation into beautiful, colourful creatures.

Two galahs rest deep inside a wreath of native abundance — banksias in full flame, grape hyacinth, wattle blossom, hakea and eucalyptus foliage layered into a lush, still world. Unhurried and utterly at home, Their Excellencies carry a quiet authority that gives the painting its name.
Rich in detail and warm in tone, the work responds to the QRAA's 2020 theme of Decadence — not as excess or indulgence, but as the natural world in full, generous bloom. Australia's flora and fauna as something truly extraordinary, hiding in plain sight.
About the QRAA
The Queensland Regional Art Awards is an annual visual arts prize for established and emerging artists living in regional and remote Queensland — a platform for professional development and a showcase of the state's creative depth.
