Boy, Girl presents a study of early conformity and the subtle ways in which identity is shaped before we’re even aware of it.
By obscuring their faces and focusing on the uppermost parts of their heads, the painting highlights how societal expectations around gender and presentation are embedded from childhood. The pink and blue palette nods to familiar codes of identity, while the immaculate grooming, not a hair out of place, suggests the quiet pressure of perfectionism.
Referencing the body as our first home, the work explores how we begin life already nestled within external structures, where appearance, behaviour, and belonging are gently but powerfully policed. It invites reflection on the tension between individuality and the early desire, or need, to conform.
